recent advances in cell therapy of spinal cord injury

abstract

abstract spinal cord injury (sci) is a devastating condition producing great personal and societal costs and for which there is no effective treatment. stem cell transplantation is a promising therapeutic strategy, though much preclinical and clinical research work remains. here, we briefly describe sci epidemiology, pathophysiology, and transplantation trial in human developments, including termination of the first human embryonic stem cell experimental and clinical stem cell strategies. research in stem cell biology and cell reprogramming is rapidly advancing, with the hope of moving stem cell therapy closer to helping people with sci. we examine issue important for clinical translation and provide a commentary on recent sci.

Cell Therapy in Spinal Cord Injury: a Mini- Reivew

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating disease which leads to progressive functional damages. Because of limited axonal regeneration in the central nervous system, there is no or little recovery expected in the patients. Different cellular and molecular approaches were investigated in SCI animal models. Cellular transplantation of stem cells can potentially replace damaged tissue and provid...

Recent advances in pathophysiology and treatment of spinal cord injury.

Thirty years ago, patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their families were told "nothing can be done" to improve function. Since the SCI patient population is reaching normal life expectancy through better health care, it has become an obviously worthwhile enterprise to devote considerable research effort to SCI. Targets for intervention in SCI toward improved function have been identifie...
